Kids & Company is an award-winning chain of childcare centers with multiple locations across Canada. Their new location in Stoney Creek, Ontario, is on the second floor of the Winona Crossing Shopping Centre. The facility looks onto a first-floor rooftop play area, which is near mechanical systems for the retail tenants below.
As part of the leasehold improvements for the new daycare, the building owner needed to construct a suitable sound barrier wall between the play area and the rest of the rooftop in order to absorb unwanted mechanical equipment noise and create a visual break.
AIL Sound Walls reduce risks to children playing
In addition to its superb sound absorption performance, our Silent Protector system was selected for its fine aesthetics and smooth PVC finish on the daycare side. This was felt to pose less of a risk for the children who might come in contact with it.
Noise barrier wall made smooth and flush on daycare side
We made the wall flush on the daycare side and ensured the posts were smooth, with no sharp edges. We also needed to make sure we considered any points on the wall where children could hurt themselves and we eliminated any gaps that could pose finger pinch hazards. The playground’s raised rubber flooring surface (not shown) was installed to be flush with the bottom of the sound wall panels.
The roof had a slight slope, so the structural steel supplier requested that the mounting stubs be the same elevation. The post spacing also varied, so instead of bolting the posts to the roof stubs, we field-welded them to make sure the wall was straight and properly spaced.
We worked with the contractor and had the material ready beforehand. This meant that as soon as the sub-roof was installed, the installers could set the posts, and come back to finish the panel install when more of the roof was in place.
